“From Slack” does not necessarily mean “edited in Slack.” Miro and Lucid keep their boards in their own editors even when Slackbot can call their MCP tools. FigJam generation creates a new file that teammates edit in Figma. Mermaid Preview posts an image. Arialine is the option here designed around editing a Mermaid board through the Slack thread itself.
1. Arialine: revise Mermaid diagrams in the Slack thread
Use Arialine when the technical diagram and the discussion that changes it belong together. A teammate can create a board from a plain-language request, paste valid Mermaid for model-free rendering, attach a .mmd file, or ask Arialine to turn a Slack discussion into a diagram. A valid Mermaid render does not use an AI generation; requests that reach an AI model do.
The board's root Slack message carries a PNG preview and an interactive HTML file. Teammates can request edits in the thread, inspect numbered versions, Undo or Rewind, and branch a version to explore an alternative. The HTML viewer exposes the Mermaid source, decisions and history. Each revision can point back to the Slack message behind the change, so a future reviewer can inspect both the current drawing and its context. Best fit: engineering teams that want text-based architecture, sequence, flow or other Mermaid diagrams created and maintained from Slack conversations.
Arialine works through ordinary Slack app surfaces on Slack plans including Free and Pro. The separate Slackbot route requires a plan with Slackbot access. The current pricing page lists Free at three boards, up to eight versions per board and 10 AI generations per workspace per day; pasted Mermaid renders without that AI cap. Team is $79 per Slack workspace per month or $756 per year, before applicable tax, regardless of member count.
2. Miro: use a board for workshops and spatial collaboration
Miro suits a session where people need to place sticky notes, cluster ideas, vote, draw by hand or combine diagrams with other workshop material. Its Slack app can create a board from a Slack shortcut, share a board, unfurl a link and deliver Miro notifications. Those actions bring a Miro board into the conversation; the board itself remains in Miro.
There are two Mermaid paths to understand. Miro's legacy Mermaid app placed generated diagrams on the board as images; users can reopen one in its code editor and update it, but the board object remains an image. Its newer native Mermaid feature is in beta: Mermaid flowcharts currently become editable Miro shapes, and edits can flow between the code and the visual diagram. Miro's current beta documentation draws an important distinction: flowcharts render as native Miro shapes and are visually editable; sequence, class and ER diagrams render as native shapes, but visual editing is marked as coming soon; other supported Mermaid types render as SVG and are not visually editable. Test the exact diagram type and editing workflow you need before depending on this beta.
Miro also appears in Slack's current MCP app list, so a connected Slackbot can use the tools Miro exposes. That is a separate route from Miro's standard Slack app, and it inherits Slackbot's plan, usage and workspace permission requirements.
Miro Free includes three editable boards. The current Miro pricing page lists Starter at $8 per member per month when billed annually. That per-seat model can suit a group that needs Miro's broader canvas, templates and workshop collaboration; it scales with the members on the plan.
3. Lucidchart: combine Mermaid input with a full visual editor
Lucid is a strong fit when a technical diagram needs careful manual arrangement, specialized shapes, data or a formal document workflow. Lucidchart has a standard Slack app as well as a newer Slackbot MCP connector; those are distinct capabilities.
The Lucidchart Slack app listing describes document notifications, sharing and permission management, link previews, summaries and shortcuts for creating documents. The Lucid Slackbot connector can search and summarize Lucid documents, generate diagrams, edit content, share documents and export PNGs. A diagram generated by Slackbot includes a preview and an option to open the document in Lucid; the Lucid editor remains the place for detailed visual work.
Lucidchart also supports Mermaid through its Diagram as code editor. Its current documentation lists class, C4, entity-relationship, flowchart, Gantt, sequence and other diagram types; changes to the code update the canvas. The admin path matters: Slack workspace owners must authorize the Lucid connector at the organization level, and Lucid admins on Team or Enterprise accounts must enable MCP before users connect it. Lucid lists Free, Individual, Team and Enterprise plans for its Slackbot connector, but it is not available on FedRAMP accounts. Check the current Lucid plan matrix for the specific chart, history and sharing features your account includes; Lucid's plan entitlements differ.
Choose Lucid when a Mermaid draft needs to become a highly arranged Lucid document or when its visual toolset is a requirement. Choose another workflow when the team's main need is a small Slack-native diagram and it does not want the additional document, account-connection and admin path.
4. Creately: start a diagram document from Slack
Creately fits teams that want a visual document or diagram to start from a Slack command and then continue in a dedicated editor. The Slack Marketplace listing documents /creately new <document name>, link previews and free use for up to five documents with a Creately account. Creately also describes Slack notifications, document sharing and comment review.
The integration gives Slack a useful entry point and review trail, while the editable diagram remains a Creately document. The published setup does not describe changing diagram shapes directly in a Slack thread. Check whether its document permissions, diagram types and comment flow fit your team before adopting it. This is a reasonable choice for teams that want a visual editor and use Slack to create, share or discuss the resulting file.
5. Mermaid Preview: post a PNG without adopting a diagram editor
Mermaid Preview's public repository documents a /mermaid command that opens a Slack modal, renders the submitted code through Mermaid CLI, uploads a PNG and deletes that generated PNG from its server after posting. The project is MIT-licensed. The Slack message is convenient for a status update or a one-off explanation, but the posted picture is not a maintained source file.
The repository lists editing an already-posted diagram as a wishlist item. Keep the .mmd source in a repository, document or other controlled location, and post a new render when it changes. Review the public app's current availability and data handling before using it with confidential diagrams; open-source code and a hosted app are separate things to assess.
6. Slack Canvas: keep the explanation beside the diagram
Slack Canvas works well for the prose around a diagram: a system overview, decision summary, owner list, open questions or runbook with an embedded image and a link to editable source. Slack says channel and DM Canvases are available on all plans; standalone Canvases require a paid plan in the Slack plan comparison.
Canvas has revision history and can restore an earlier Canvas version, but workspace or organization owners and admins can turn that history off. Check the Canvas history settings before making it part of an audit or recovery process. A Canvas revision is a revision of the document: it does not make an embedded PNG editable as Mermaid or show a source-level diagram diff.
Choose Canvas as the home for the written record. For a frequently changing diagram, store the editable source in a diagram tool and place its image or link in the Canvas.
7. FigJam: create a whiteboard from Slack context, then edit in Figma
FigJam is a useful Slack-to-whiteboard route for teams already working in Figma. With the Figma app connected to Slackbot, a teammate can prompt Slackbot or point it to a Slack message, thread, channel or Canvas and ask it to create a new FigJam diagram. Figma lists flowcharts, Gantt, sequence and state diagrams as supported examples. The result opens as a new FigJam file in the connected member's Figma account. Teammates do not automatically get edit access: Figma file permissions determine whether they can view or edit, and each editor needs a seat that includes FigJam. The documented Slack workflow creates a new file; it does not describe updating an existing FigJam from the conversation or editing Mermaid in the thread. This workflow requires the Figma app to be installed and the member's account connected to Slackbot. Slackbot availability and usage limits depend on the Slack plan: Free and Pro access may be limited to previews, Business+ currently has 15 messages per member per week, and Enterprise+ has no weekly or lifetime message cap. App approval depends on workspace policy; Slack says approval is always required in Enterprise Grid and Enterprise+ organizations. Workspaces that installed Figma before June 18, 2026 need an owner to approve and re-authorize the app for the Slackbot diagram features. Check Slackbot limits and Slack's MCP app setup and approval rules before choosing this route.
Other Slack connections: Cacoo and Slickplan
If alerts or sharing are enough, two other diagram products have narrower Slack routes. Nulab’s Cacoo Slack guide describes channel notifications when a team member or diagram is added or a diagram receives an update or comment; it also says this integration is unavailable to Legacy Free and Legacy Plus users. Slickplan’s Slack integration guide documents sending a project to a Slack channel. In both cases, the source project remains in the vendor’s editor; the documented Slack route is for updates or sharing, not editing diagram elements in the conversation.
Compare the cost and Slack plan, not just the app price
A published vendor price does not include every dependency. For a twelve-person team, Miro Starter's annual-billing list price works out to 12 × $8 × 12 = $1,152 per year, or $96 per month equivalent. Arialine Team is $756 per workspace per year, or $63 per month equivalent, with a $79 monthly billing option. This is a narrow license-cost comparison, not a like-for-like feature score: Miro sells a much broader collaboration canvas; Arialine is focused on Mermaid diagrams and their Slack conversation. Slackbot changes the calculation for workflows that depend on its MCP connectors. Slack currently lists Slackbot on Business+ and Enterprise+; Free and Pro users may only have trial or preview access. Business+ costs $15 per active user per month billed annually and currently allows 15 Slackbot messages per member each week. Enterprise+ does not have weekly or lifetime message limits. A standard vendor Slack app and a Slackbot MCP connector are not interchangeable. Miro's standard app can create/share boards without asking Slackbot to do the work. Lucid's classic Slack app can handle notifications, links and shortcuts; its MCP connector adds Slackbot actions, subject to connection and admin approval. A practical selection test
Use one diagram the team genuinely needs to review. For an API request flow, for example, start with the same source requirements in each shortlisted tool, then ask a teammate to make one realistic change—such as adding a retry path after a timeout.
Record what happens:
- Can the teammate create or open the diagram from the Slack discussion without losing the source?
- Can they edit the existing diagram, or do they need to create a new file or post a replacement image?
- Can you identify the current version and recover an earlier one?
- Can you find the message or decision behind a changed edge?
- Can you export the format the next reader needs?
- Which account, Slack plan, app approval and editor permissions did the workflow require?
A diagram that renders is not automatically an accurate system model. Ask an owner to verify that every component, arrow and condition matches the source discussion or authoritative system record before treating the diagram as documentation.
